Visit to PASCH Cheyenne Mountain High School

Consul Biedermann and Hanni Geist visited Cheyenne Mountain High School (CO), a German Partner School since 2008.

German Federal Foreign Office, seeks to build a global network of schools to foster long-term interest in modern Germany and the German language

Spring was a busy travel season for DAAD San Francisco, Hanni Geist traveled in California, Washington and Montana to give info sessions at a number of universities, meeting old and new faces. Together with Stefan Biedermann, Deputy Consul General for the German Consulate in Los Angeles, DAAD San Francisco travelled to Utah, engaging with high school and university students, faculty, alumni and visiting German scholars. At Brigham Young University Leslie Harlson spoke with students about DAAD grants and Consul Biedermann connected with Model European Union students about the intricies of the EU and its future! They also visited Provo High School, talking to over 100 students about Germany and the European Union. At the University of Utah, Consul Biedermann gave a keynote lecture at the Hinckley Institute of Politics and Leslie Harlson shared details about DAAD funding opportunities. They also hosted an evening reception for DAAD alumni, current DAAD grantees and members of the GAIN (German Academic International Network) Stammtisch
Los Angeles Info Tour: October 2012
SoCalTogether with Stefan Biedermann, Deputy Consul General for the German Consulate in Los Angeles, DAAD San Francisco visited universities in the Los Angeles area.

At UCLA and the University of Southern Calilfornia Leslie Harlson and Consul Biedermann spoke to students about the array of opportunities availabe to study, reserach and intern in Germany, as well as DAAD funding to support such activities! Leslie also visited the Claremont Colleges.
Idaho and Washington Information Tour: March 2012

Together with Michael Ahrens, German Consul for Cultural and Press Affairs in San Francisco, DAAD San Francisco embarked on a tour of universities in eastern Washington and Idaho to promote study and research in Germany.

Visiting Boise State University, Gonzaga University, University of Idaho, Moscow and Washington State University, Pullman, Leslie Harlson and Consul Ahrens spoke with students, faculty and administrators about the array of opportunities in Germany, as well as DAAD funding to support such academic stays in Deutschland!
Utah Information Tour: January 2012

Together with Michael Ott, German Consul for Cultural Affairs in Los Angeles, DAAD San Francisco embarked on a tour of universities in Utah to promote study and research in Germany.

Visiting University of Utah, Utah State University and Brigham Young University, Leslie Harlson and Consul Ott spoke with students, faculty and administrators about the array of opportunities in Germany, as well as DAAD funding to support such academic stays in Deutschland! They also held an alumni reception in Salt Lake City for local DAAD alumni.

Virtual Study Abroad Fair

On August 25, DAAD participated in its first "Virtual Study Abroad Fair." Over 500 students visited the Study in Germany booth at this online fair organized by CollegeWeekLive.


At the virtual fair, DAAD also hosted a live video presentation on scholarships for study in Germany. This presentation was viewed by over 70 people.

Colorado State Information Tour

From March 2 - April 2, 2011, Leslie Harlson, from the DAAD Information Center San Francisco was on the road in Colorado with Michael Ott, Consul for Press & Cultural Affairs at the German Consulate in Los Angeles. Read the LA Consulate's report on the trip here.

Consul Ott and Leslie started the week at the Cheyenne Mountain High School, a PASCH School in Colorado Springs. The PASCH initiative, launched in 2008 by the German Federal Foreign Office, seeks to build a global network of schools to foster long-term interest in modern Germany and the German language in young people. Subsequent days took Leslie and Consul Ott to Colorado College, Colorado State University-Fort Collins, University of Northern Colorado and University of Colorado-Boulder. where they presented information on the German higher education system and scholarships for studying and researching in Germany.

On March 31, alumni from the Boulder area gathered for beer, Pommes and networking with fellow DAAD alumni. Prost!

Washington State Information Tour


From February 28 - March 3, Leslie Harlson, from the DAAD Information Center San Francisco was on the road in Washington state with Michael Ahrens, Consul of Press & Cultural Affairs at the German Consulate in San Franicsco, and Arndt Peltner of Radio Goethe.

The three representatives of German higher education, culture and music visited Western Washington University, Pacific Lutheran University, Seattle University and University of Washington. Leslie presented information on scholarships for studying in Germany, Consul Ahrens on sports in Germany and Arndt served as a DJ for evening dance parties at Western Washington and Pacific Lutheran Universities to old and new German music!

On March 2, alumni from the Seattle area gathered at the German pub "Feierabend" for beer, Currywurst and networking with fellow DAAD alumni. Prost!

DAAD Holiday Gathering 2010: die Feuerzangenbowle

On Friday, December 10, 2010 over 60 DAAD Alumni and friends of DAAD and the Goethe-Institut San Francisco gathered at the offices of the Information Center San Francisco / Goethe Institut for a festive holiday party.


Drinks and appetizers preceded a viewing of the German cult classic: die Feuerzangenbowle, after which everyone enjoyed their own glass of this warm, potent drink. Notice the burning cone of sugar, which drips over the warmed wine!
Happy Holidays from DAAD Information Center San Francisco...Frohes Fest und Guten Rutsch!

What is die Feuerzangenbowle?
Literally translated as “fire-tongs punch”, Feuerzangenbowle is a traditional German drink for the holiday season where a rum-soaked cone of sugar is set on fire and dripped into mulled wine. The 1944 film of the same name is a cult classic shown at universities in Germany every year around this time, with a level of audience participation akin to showings of the Rocky Horror Picture Show here in the U.S.!
Germany Alumni Mixer - San Diego

On November 16, alumni from the networks of the German Consulate General of Los Angeles, DAAD, German Research Foundation, Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, University of Heidelberg and CDS International gathered at the Fish Market in San Diego to network and share experiences.

Consul Michael Ott from the Los Angeles Consulate welcomed attendees and opened the delicious buffet! This 'Germany Alumni Mixer' was hosted by the German Consulate General of LA and the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD).



Idealist.org Graduate School Fair

On November 1, over 800 young idealists visited the Idealist.org Grad School Fair in Golden Gate Park in San Francisco

Young Ambassador Jameka Woodberry joined Information Officer Leslie Harlson at the DAAD table where they spoke with a steady steam of students and young professionals interested in pursuing a graduate degree.

In the words of one of the visitors: "I didn't realize there are so many opportunities for US citizens to study abroad long-term. I hadn't thought about attending school in Germany before, but now I am."

DAAD at the 2010 German Studies Association Conference

The 34th Conference of the German Studies Association came to Oakland, California for 2010!

Scholars in German, Austrian, and Swiss history, literature, culture studies, political science, and economics gathered from 7-10 October for their annual meeting. DAAD hosted a reception and also took part in the Auswaertiges Amt's initiative "Echo 2010: The German language goes on a world tour." We asked DAAD Visiting Professors, staff, and conference attendees: "What is your favorite German word?" See below for just a few of the responses we collected.

Reception and Discussion with Steven Hill

"Germany's Alternative to Wall Street Capitalism" with Steven Hill, Director of the Political Reform Program at the New America Foundation.

Presented by the San Francisco Eric M. Warburg Chapter of the American Council on Germany, the Goethe-Institut San Francisco and DAAD.

About Steven Hill
Mr. Hill is a political writer and the Director of the Political Reform Program at the New America Foundation, which seeks to develop the best opportunities for reform, educate opinion leaders and the public about electoral alternatives, and encourage the formation of a broad-based coalition.

His new book, Europe's Promise: Why the European Way Is the Best Hope for an Insecure Age, was published in January 2010. His previous books include 10 Steps to Repair American Democracy (2006), Fixing Elections: The Failure of America's Winner-Take-All Politics (2003) and Whose Vote Counts (with Rob Richie, 2001).

Mr. Hill's articles and commentaries have appeared throughout the world, including in the New York Times, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, International Herald Tribune, Guardian, Financial Times and other leading publications. Mr. Hill has appeared on national and local radio and television programs, and has lectured widely in the United States and Europe. He has been a leading force for political reform in the United States for many years.

Election Party 2009: Deutschland wählt

Our special Election Party on Sunday, September 27th, was a huge success. Three hundred guests joined the Consulate General of Germany, San Francisco, the Goethe Institut San Francisco, and the DAAD for a German breakfast and live screening of the election results.
